Depression can feel different for different people
Some changes are emotional. Others show up in sleep, energy, appetite, concentration or everyday functioning.
Persistent low mood
Sadness, emptiness or irritability that continues.
Loss of interest
Less interest or pleasure in things you normally enjoy.
Low motivation
Difficulty getting started or keeping up with usual tasks.
Sleep changes
Trouble sleeping, sleeping more, or not feeling rested.
Low energy
Fatigue or a noticeable drop in energy.
Concentration
Difficulty focusing, thinking clearly or making decisions.
Withdrawal
Pulling away from people, activities or responsibilities.
Appetite changes
Eating noticeably more or less than usual.
Guilt or hopelessness
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or hopelessness.
Having some of these symptoms does not by itself confirm depression. Persistent symptoms, symptoms occurring together, or changes in everyday functioning deserve a proper assessment.
Already diagnosed with depression?
You can consult UWAY while continuing the treatment already prescribed to you. Tell the Ayurveda doctor about your diagnosis, medicines, psychotherapy or counselling, other health conditions and any recent changes in symptoms.
Do not stop antidepressants, psychiatric medicines or other prescribed treatment on your own. Any change to existing treatment should be discussed with the clinician who manages it.
Not sure what you are experiencing?
You do not need to decide for yourself whether what you are experiencing is depression before asking for help. Persistent low mood, loss of interest, poor sleep, fatigue or difficulty functioning can have different causes and deserve a proper assessment.
If your main concern is feeling low or losing interest, see our Low Mood & Loss of Interest page.
How UWAY approaches depression
UWAY follows a doctor-led approach. The first consultation is used to understand your symptoms, severity, medical history, sleep, energy, digestion, daily routine, existing medicines and any psychological or psychiatric care you are receiving.
1. Medical assessment
Emotional symptoms are reviewed together with physical health, medicines, sleep and everyday functioning.
2. Existing care is considered
Psychiatric care, psychotherapy or counselling is considered rather than ignored or stopped abruptly.
3. Individual care plan
If Ayurveda care is appropriate, the doctor explains the plan, what it involves and when progress should be reviewed.
What Ayurveda care may include
There is no single Ayurveda plan for everyone with depression. Depending on the assessment, care may include:
Ayurveda medicines
Prescribed when medically appropriate after assessment.
Sleep & routine
Guidance around sleep and daily rhythm where relevant.
Diet & digestion
Dietary and digestive-health advice when clinically relevant.
Stress & lifestyle
Practical measures to support daily functioning and recovery.
Counselling
Psychological support can be included when appropriate.
Follow-up
Review of symptoms, functioning and response to care.
Depression ranges from mild to severe. Some people need psychotherapy, psychiatric medicines, specialist mental-health care or urgent medical support. If another form of care is more appropriate, that should be identified during assessment.
How the online consultation works
1. Book
Choose an online consultation and share the relevant medical information.
2. Assessment
The doctor reviews symptoms, health history, existing medicines and current mental-health care.
3. Care plan
If Ayurveda care is appropriate, the doctor explains the personalised plan and follow-up required.
Questions about Ayurveda treatment for depression
Can Ayurveda be used for depression?
Ayurveda may form part of care for some people after a medical assessment. Depression varies in severity and some people need psychotherapy, psychiatric medicines, specialist mental-health treatment or urgent care. The appropriate approach depends on the individual.
Is persistent low mood the same as depression?
No. Low mood can occur for many reasons. Depression usually involves persistent symptoms that occur together and affect how a person feels or functions. Ongoing or concerning symptoms should be assessed by a clinician.
Can I consult a UWAY doctor if I already take antidepressants?
Yes. Tell the UWAY doctor exactly what you take and who prescribed it. Do not stop or change antidepressants or other psychiatric medicines without speaking to the clinician managing them.
Does everyone receive Ayurveda medicines?
No. Recommendations depend on the medical assessment. The doctor should explain whether medicines are appropriate and what other measures may be relevant.
Can counselling be combined with Ayurveda care?
Yes, when appropriate. Counselling can be used alongside doctor-led Ayurveda care and other mental-health treatment.
How long does treatment take?
There is no fixed duration for everyone. It depends on symptoms, severity, existing treatment, health history and response to care. The doctor should explain when progress needs to be reviewed.
Need urgent help?
UWAY's online Ayurveda consultation is not an emergency service. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, feel unable to keep yourself safe, or need urgent mental-health support, seek immediate medical help. In India, Tele-MANAS is available on 14416 for 24×7 mental-health support.
Start with a doctor consultation
If depression, persistent low mood or loss of interest is affecting your life, speak with a doctor about what has changed and what type of care may be suitable.
