Anal fistulas do not usually heal on their own. With Ayurveda you have a solution!
An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel or cavity that connects the inside of the anus to an opening on the skin around the anus.
Most anal fistulas are the result of an infection that has not healed the right way. Anal fistulas can cause unpleasant symptoms and usually do not heal on their own.
Causes of Anal Fistula
Inside the lining of the anus, there are a number of small glands that produce mucus, known as anal glands. At times, these glands get clogged and become infected due to various reasons like injury or abrasion, leading to a pus-filled abscess. When the pus drains away (either spontaneously or surgically), it leaves a small tunnel behind. This drainage tunnel(fistula) remains open and connects the infected anal canal to the outside skin somewhere around the anus.
Symptoms of Anal Fistula
- Constant throbbing pain and swelling around the anus.
- Itchy skin or irritation of the skin around the anus.
- Bleeding along the stool
- A foul-smelling blood or pus drainage from anal opening.
- Frequent anal abscesses
- Painful bowel movements.
- Fever, chills and a general feeling of fatigue.
Risk factors of anal fistula
The major contributing causes to an anal fistula are anal abscesses. About 50% of these abscesses can develop into a fistula. Other conditions that may cause an anal fistula include:
- Previous history of anal abscess or fistula
- Crohn’s disease or other inflammatory bowel disease
- Infections in the anal glands
- Trauma to the anal tissues
- Surgery or radiation for treatment of anal cancer
Complications of Anal Fistula
Recurrence of an abscess and an anal fistula can happen even after effective treatment. Bowel incontinence (losing control of one’s bowel) is a known complication following fistula surgery, which can significantly impact the quality of life.
Anal fistulas do not go away by itself and hence must be treated.
Anal fistulas are more common in men. However, women also get them.
Anal fistulas occur most often in adults around the age of 40 but may occur in younger people as well, especially if they have a history of Crohn’s disease.
Surgery for an anal fistula always carries the risk of infection, bowel incontinence and recurrence of the fistula.
Early stages of anal fistula responds to internal medications. However, recurrent anal fistulas are treated with an Ayurvedic treatment for anal fistulas known as Ksharsutra therapy. This involves the use of medicated thread being inserted in the fistula tract, which helps in healing the fistula tract.
At UWAY, the initial treatment plan includes, internal medications and external oil application.
Certain anal fistulas respond to treatments like oral medications and oil therapies, but recurrent fistulas has to be treated with Ksharsutra or medicated thread procedure.
Most of the allopathic interventions like fistulotomy or fibrin glue injection techniques have more than 30% chance of recurrence. However, ayurvedic inventions like medicated thread treatment has minimal chance of recurrence and at the same time, highly successful in treating anal fistulas.
Most of the ayurvedic medications do not usually interfere with Allopathic medications. However, it is always good to discuss the existing medications that you are already on with your treating doctor at UWAY.
Ayurveda medications are usually a very safe and effective option for treating anal fistulas.
