Menopause can lead to a lot of stress, affecting your normal lifestyle.

The period before and after menopause can be an emotional roller coaster for many women. Ayurveda helps to sail through it smoothly and safely with your confidence intact!

Would you believe that nearly 4 per cent of Indian women experience signs of menopause anywhere between the ages of 29 and 34, as per a very recent survey conducted by ISEC (Institution of Social). The figure goes up to 8 per cent in the case of women between 35 and 39 years of age.

Menopause is a natural event in the life cycle of a woman when she permanently stops having her menstrual cycles. It is signaled by a period of 12 months without a menstrual period and marks the end of reproductive competence in a woman. Menopause typically happens between the age of 45 to 55 years. However, it can develop before or after this age range as well.

Natural decline in reproductive hormones. When a woman starts nearing menopause, there is a marked decline in the production of the female hormones called estrogen and progesterone — the hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle. This leads to changes in the pattern of the menstrual cycle, resulting in irregular periods- longer or shorter, heavier or lighter until it stops completely.

The menopause experience differs from woman to woman. You may experience the following symptoms in the months or years leading up to menopause:

  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Mood swings
  • Weight gain
  • Difficulty in concentrating
  • Thinning hair and dry skin
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Decreased libido or sex drive
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Surgery to remove ovaries due to medical reasons such as uterine cancer or endometriosis. This surgical procedure results in immediate menopause.
  • Cancer therapies like chemotherapy and radiation therapy can induce menopause if they cause damage to the ovaries.
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency: Premature menopause may result from the failure of ovaries to produce normal levels of the reproductive hormones estrogen and progesterone, which can stem from either genetic factors or autoimmune disease.

Most women experience menopausal symptoms. Some women experience few, or no symptoms.

If menopause happens before the age of 45 years, it is termed as early menopause.

If menopause happens before the age of 40, for any reason, it is referred to as premature menopause.

In postmenopause, symptoms of menopause may have eased or stopped entirely, but some women continue to have symptoms for longer.

The main treatment for menopause symptoms is hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which replaces the hormones that are at low levels.

Risks of HRT have been well documented. HRT may raise your chances of, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, blood clots and stroke. New researches have shown that prolonged HRT can also induce dementia in middle- aged people.

The hormonal changes associated with menopause can affect physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being. Ayurvedic treatment of menopause include physical as well as psychological management of the condition. Hence, a combination of oral medications, external oil therapies, healthy lifestyle and dietary modifications are generally advised. This is complemented with yoga and meditation which has been proven to play an important role in the management of menopausal symptoms. In certain cases when patients who do not respond positively, the treatment may include detox therapies like panchakarma.
