Recognising the pattern

Does this keep happening?

Recurring nasal symptoms can look like another cold. The pattern often tells us when a closer medical assessment may help.

01

Morning sneezing

Repeated bouts of sneezing, particularly after waking.

02

Blocked or running nose

Clear discharge or congestion that repeatedly returns.

03

Nose rubbing or itching

Frequent rubbing, itching or discomfort around the nose.

04

Watery or itchy eyes

Eye symptoms occurring along with nasal discomfort.

05

Triggered by surroundings

Symptoms after dust exposure or in particular environments.

06

Disturbed sleep

Nasal blockage, snoring or mouth breathing during sleep.

When the same symptoms repeatedly return, it may be worth understanding why they keep coming back rather than treating every episode as another cold.
A useful distinction

Is it allergy—or another cold?

Allergic rhinitis and recurrent infections can sometimes look similar in children. These patterns may help, but they do not replace a medical assessment.

More suggestive of an allergy pattern

  • Repeated sneezing
  • Clear nasal discharge
  • Itching of the nose or eyes
  • Recurring nasal blockage
  • Symptoms associated with particular exposures

Other causes also need consideration

  • Recurrent respiratory infections
  • Enlarged adenoids
  • Sinus problems
  • Other causes of persistent nasal blockage
  • Associated asthma or wheezing

A proper clinical history helps distinguish between these possibilities. Testing or specialist evaluation is advised only where appropriate. Also see our page on recurrent cough and cold in children.

The UWAY approach

Understand the recurring pattern first

Not every child with allergic rhinitis requires the same treatment. The doctor considers the whole case before advising what is appropriate.

STEP 01

Understand what keeps happening

We look at timing, frequency, possible triggers, sleep, mouth breathing, cough, wheezing and the child’s general health.

STEP 02

Review current care

Previous prescriptions, current medicines, medical reports, allergy investigations and ENT evaluations are considered where available.

STEP 03

Plan appropriate care

If Ayurveda has a suitable role, the formulation, dose, duration and practical recommendations are selected for the individual child.

A common parent concern

Already using antihistamines or a steroid nasal spray?

Steroid nasal sprays are established treatments for allergic rhinitis and can be appropriate and effective in children when correctly prescribed.

Do not stop a prescribed nasal spray or any other medicine on your own.

If symptoms continue to return, UWAY doctors can assess whether Ayurveda has an appropriate role in the child’s continuing care.

The objective is not simply to replace one medicine with another.

Review medicines already being used

Medicine and safety

What may be prescribed for your child?

Depending on the child’s condition, the doctor may prescribe established classical Ayurveda formulations, including herbal preparations where appropriate.

Important safety information

When should you seek prompt medical care?

Please seek appropriate medical attention if your child develops:

  • Persistent wheezing or breathlessness
  • Severe or persistent fever
  • Significant facial pain or swelling
  • Persistent discharge from only one nostril
  • Recurrent significant nosebleeds
  • Pauses in breathing during sleep
  • A marked deterioration in the child’s general condition

Severe breathing difficulty requires urgent medical attention.

Frequently asked questions

What parents often ask us

Can Ayurveda cure allergic rhinitis in children?

Allergic rhinitis can be recurrent or persistent, and its pattern differs from child to child. It would not be appropriate to promise a cure before evaluating the child. The doctor assesses symptoms, possible triggers, associated conditions and previous treatment before explaining what role Ayurveda may have and what can reasonably be expected.

Can I stop my child’s nasal spray after starting Ayurveda?

No prescribed medicine should be stopped without discussing it with the treating doctor. Steroid nasal sprays are established treatments and generally have a favourable safety profile when appropriately prescribed and used.

Are the medicines herbal?

Many Ayurveda medicines used in clinical practice are herbal formulations. Depending on the child’s condition, the UWAY doctor may prescribe established classical herbal Ayurveda formulations where appropriate and explain why each medicine has been selected.

Are Ayurveda medicines safe for children?

No medicine should be described as automatically safe simply because it is herbal or natural. The formulation, dosage and duration matter. At UWAY, medicines are prescribed after evaluating the child’s age, symptoms, medical history and other medicines being taken.

Is allergic rhinitis the same as repeatedly catching a cold?

No. Some symptoms overlap, but allergic rhinitis more typically involves repeated sneezing, itching, clear nasal discharge and nasal blockage and may follow a recognisable exposure pattern. A proper history helps distinguish between them.

Will my child need an allergy test?

Not every child requires allergy testing. The diagnosis is often based initially on symptoms and clinical history. In some children, testing or further evaluation may help clarify the diagnosis or identify relevant triggers.

When the symptoms keep returning, the first step is understanding why.
