In a chaotic world and often a chaotic home, the toilet has quietly become the last refuge.
One of my patients once told me, “The toilet is the only place where I’m not worried about my boss or my customers.”
With meetings, deadlines, chores, and the noise of home, the toilet has quietly become the one place people find a moment of peace. For many, it’s the only space where no one knocks, and you get to catch your breath, scroll through your phone, or simply pause.
But if you’re someone who also spends long hours at a desk, this habit might be doing more harm than you realise. I often see young professionals, especially new fathers, juggling home and work, fall into this pattern. It starts out innocently a few extra minutes in the toilet for some solitude but combined with a sedentary routine, it can set the stage for something painful.
Hemorrhoids or piles don’t just affect older people. Today, we see them in people in their 20s and 30s. In fact, if you have a desk job and use the toilet as a scroll zone, there’s a 60 percent chance you might end up with piles regardless of your age or gender.
And it doesn’t end there. Even after surgery, recurrence is common if daily habits don’t change.
But you don’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul. You just need to adopt a few mindful habits that work with your body, not against it. These are simple, natural steps that help whether you’re at an early stage, healing post-surgery, or just want to prevent it from happening again.
1) Keep your toilet visits short. If nothing happens in five minutes, it’s not going to help to sit longer and scroll. It only adds more pressure where you don’t want it.
2) Start your mornings with warm water and a few soaked raisins or a spoonful of ghee. It sounds simple, but it makes a big difference in how smoothly things move inside.
3) During your work hours, take a short break every 40 to 45 minutes. Stand up, stretch, walk a few steps. Your body isn’t meant to be still all day, and even a little movement goes a long way.
Right after waking up, just sit. No phone. No to-do list. Just breathe. Let your body catch up with your mind.
Try this routine for just seven days. You’ll feel the difference — not just in your digestion, but in your energy, comfort, and clarity.
